That's the route of my first trip in New Zealand which covered Auckland, National Park (including Tongariro National Park), Wellington, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Arthur's Pass, and Greymouth.
Means of transportation: Intercity, Interislander, Northern Explorer, TranzAlpine.
The train-freak in me would have wanted to cover all on rails, but as it is always the case in life, you cannot have all you want. Northern Explorer which begins in Auckland and terminates in Wellington, doesn't operate on a daily basis. Should I adjust my itinerary to Kiwi Rail, I would have to add an extra week to my itinerary which I don't mind actually... but my boss does. Hence, Intercity replaced Northern Explorer from Auckland to National Park. The other line of Kiwi Rail: Coastal Pacific Line between Picton and Christchurch, too bad, doesn't operate in winter. Once again, Intercity replaced my route from Picton to Kaikoura, and from Kaikoura to Christchurch. And yeah, I did ride the TranzAlpine, twice! After all, which season is best to transfer over the Aplines if not winter?
Traveling to Southern Hemisphere for the first time, I encountered various new moving beauties a.k.a. animals and new still beauties a.k.a. plants. After traveling to few countries in the past, at last, I have found seashores which I can say, rivals to those of my home country, Indonesia. Indeed, there's no better way to tell about New Zealand than through pictures.
